This piece is about how our thoughts sometimes tend to go on downward tangents, even if our train of thought started with innocent thoughts. We may find it hard to snap out of it, maybe even wanting to indulge in these negative thoughts, especially during difficult times.

While composing this winter-themed piece for Orchestra Toronto, “Snowflakes by the Hearth”, I imagined people gathering by a warm fire on the longest night of the year, while the cold wind is blowing and snowflakes are falling.

Soprano (Arushi Das) and piano (Angela Ng)
The text that this song is set to is “As One Listens to the Rain” by Octavio Paz, which is one of the most emotionally moving poems I have ever read. It is serene and gives me a sense of timelessness and weightlessness, a comforting dream-like state.
Acquainted with the Night

Soprano (Monica Lindsay) and piano
āThis song is set to the text of Robert Frost’s poem “Acquainted with the Night”, a sorrowful and eerie poem about isolation. The intensity of the character’s emotions stifles any desire to seek out a connection with another person; the character chooses to dwell alone in darkness instead.
