This sextet is written for a subset of the American Modern Ensemble for the 2025 Mostly Modern Festival. As someone who loves bold, bass-heavy music, I set myself the challenge of composing a piece for low instruments—deliberately omitting high winds and strings.

"Beggars Can Be Choosers" is a clamourous work. It is a call to courage, a reminder that our actions carry weight even when we feel small or unworthy. The title reflects a belief that being in a position of need does not mean we are without agency. I hope this piece inspires a sense of empowerment, especially during times when outcomes feel beyond our control.
